"Let's Ask Disney!": Wes Ball and Studio Trigger Playfully Eye Up Planet of the Apes Anime Series

Kingdom of Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball and Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Delicious in Dungeon) co-founder Hiroyuki Imaishi have playfully mused on the idea of a collaborative Planet of the Apesanime series at Disney.

Imaishi and Ball sat for an interview with Japanese outlet The River earlier this month. Ball noted similarities between Gurren Lagann's Simon and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' Noah, before then commenting on the difficulty of trimming content for a film. "But with an anime series," he said, "you can take your time and draw things. A movie is two hours long, so even if you try to cram everything in, it's not that easy. I'd love to try a series." Imaishi responded, "Planet of the Apes is a fascinating series that seems like it could do a lot of different things if it were made into a TV series." The interviewer then suggested collaborating on a brand-new Planet of the Apes anime.

In response, Ball reportedly pointed up to the sky, yelling, "Yes! That sounds interesting. Let's ask Disney! That could be great!" Imaishi noted, "There aren't many films in Japan that feature monkeys as the main characters. If I were to make one for the Japanese market, I'd like to try a 'Monkey School'." Ball then replied, "That's great! (laughs) Let's create a 'Hero Ape Demia' like in 'My Hero Academia!'" Ball then shared that his daughter was hooked on a manga "about a girl, and it features people from various planets, including Saturn. It's a famous old work," later revealed to be Sailor Moon.

If ever made into reality, it wouldn't be the first time that Trigger has created an anime based on a Western IP. Just this month, Imaishi, who directed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, released new artwork for the series ahead of an upcoming RPG release. The series took inspiration from Cyberpunk 2077, which in turn was based on Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk universe. Along similar live-action and anime collaborative lines, fans also await further release news on the cross-continental partnership for MAPPA's Lazarus anime, with Cowboy Bebop's Shinichiro Watanabe teaming up with John Wick's Chad Stahelski.

For now, Studio Trigger is currently seeing out its release of Delicious in Dungeon, inspired by another tabletop title, Dungeon & Dragons. While a Planet of the Apes anime series is unlikely, given the growing pattern, perhaps getting a tabletop adaptation first could be the way to truly capture Trigger's attention.
